Giving them the convenience of being able to contact you through your website will enthrall customers. There’s been exponential growth in smartphone users globally. Hence, it’s essential to add the clickable phone number WordPress feature to serve existing customers better and make new ones.
This article will elaborate on why adding a clickable phone number button (a.k.a. tap-to-call button, click-to-call button, or click-to-talk button) in WordPress makes sense and show you how to create one.
Why Create A Clickable Phone Number In WordPress
The reason for adding clickable phone numbers is to make customer support available more easily. Suppose you’re running a small business website. In that case, you’re bound to get queries from existing and potential customers needing quotes, product or service information, or immediate support.
Though the contact form, live chat, and email link feature of your website may help in this regard, in many situations, users may wish to speak personally and immediately.
In today’s smartphone saturated world, users find it immensely helpful to click-to-call and receive immediate help. Sometimes, there’s no better alternative than a human connection that leads to increased customer satisfaction.
Here are the two methods of how to easily create a clickable phone number in WordPress.
Method 1: Use A Plugin To Create a Clickable Phone Number Link
You can create clickable call links to your WordPress site using a recommended plugin like the WP Call Button plugin. Once you install and activate the plugin, adding clickable call buttons is a breeze.
The plugin method is the easier one among the two methods in this article. It lets you easily add a clickable call button in different areas of WordPress, including in Classic editor, Block editor, WordPress sidebar widget, and anywhere else via sticky floating call buttons that scroll as users scroll your site.
Once you’ve installed and activated the WP Call Button plugin, these are the steps you have to follow to set things up:
Step 1 – After installation and activation of the plugin, configure the plugin Sticky Call Button settings by going to the Settings > WP Call Button page.
There are two ways in which you can choose to display the phone number buttons:
- Sticky Call Buttons (these scroll along as users browse your website).
- Static Call Buttons (these stay in one place).
For creating a Sticky Call Button of your choice, you can enter your preferences in the following required settings:
- Call Button Text
- Button Positioning
- Call Button Color
To make use of these settings, in the phone number field, you need to enter the business phone number visitors can call. The WP Call Button plugin automatically detects the country code upon selecting the country.
Once you’re done entering your desired call button text and making your selections for the call button positioning and call button color — by default, the plugin will add a clickable call button on every page and for every device.
The Call Button Visibility options allow you to choose the option to show it only on certain pages. Further, where you’re asked the question, “Show Call Button Only On Mobile Devices?” — activating the toggle allows you to show the call button on mobile devices only. This is an incredible way of enhancing the mobile user’s experience.
Next, once you’re satisfied with your setting preferences, you need to toggle your call now button status to active and then click the save changes button. You’ll then see your call now button live on your website.
Your clickable phone number button, which we named “Call Us Now” in the example above, is now live on the website. You can visit your website to ensure it’s visible and test that it works fine.
Step 2 – This optional step is to add a Static Call Button on your WordPress. This time around, configure the plugin Static Call Button settings by going to the Settings > WP Call Button page.
Like you did for the Sticky Call Button settings in step 1, here again, you can enter the button text and color and opt to hide the phone icon in your button.
Static Call Button settings differ from the Sticky Call Button settings in how you choose to publish the button on your website. As seen at the bottom of the screenshot above, a shortcode is generated in the classic WordPress editor; the shortcode can be copied and pasted into a post, widget, or page (contact page, about page, etc.).
To do that, copy the shortcode below and paste it inside the post or page where you want to add it. If you’re using the modern WordPress editor, there is a built-in WordPress block you can use.
Step 3 – This step is for publishing your Static Call Button on your WordPress using a WordPress Block.
To create your Static Call Button using a WordPress Block, start by creating a new page or post in WordPress, followed by clicking on the plus icon. Then, select the WP Call Button block.
Upon clicking the WP Call Button, you’ll see options inside the block editor located on the right, allowing you to change the color of the static button and text, font size, and position.
After selecting our settings, click on the blue Publish button located on the top right corner so that your page (or post) is now live with the newly created static button displayed on your website.
Step 4 – This optional step is for adding a clickable phone number in the WordPress sidebar using the sidebar widget. Start by going to Appearance > Widgets and dragging the WordPress Call Button widget to the widget-ready area of your sidebar.
Next, edit the title, description, button text, and the button and text color. Then, save your settings and click on Done.
That’s it! As you can see, the WP Call Button plugin is the easiest and best plugin to use for adding a clickable phone number to your WordPress site. What makes it even more appealing is the fact the plugin is free.
It also works seamlessly with Google Analytics when you use the Monsterinsights plugin. This way, you can automatically track which pages get you the most leads and how many people click on your call button.
Method 2: Manually Create Clickable Phone Number In WordPress
For manually creating clickable telephone numbers anywhere on your WordPress website, the process involves simple steps of copying and pasting an HTML code snippet.
The HTML code snippet creates phone links on all kinds of devices, including mobile devices, PCs, and Macs. For instance, in a Windows 10 OS, the link will open on Skype, while on a Mac, it will open in Facetime.
Step 1 – Open the post (or page) where the clickable phone number is to be added. In case you’re using the new WordPress editor, add a new HTML block.
Step 2 – Copy and paste the following HTML code snippet into the HTML block:
|<!–This link will work on Android and iPhone. It will be visible to desktop users but will result in an error when clicked –>|
<a href=”tel:+15555551212″>+1 (555) 555-1212</a>
<a href=”tel:15555551212″>Call Me</a>
Step 3 – Click Publish and go to the live post to check the result.
